The Highlight Reel

Discover why chasing every new tech trend might be the biggest distraction in your engineering career yet.

Your feed is lying to you. Not on purpose. By selection.

Online AI discourse is a distorted sample of reality. You see the breakthrough. The slick demo. The diagram of seven agents passing work around like a relay team.

You don't see that the demo was take four.

Nobody posts the afternoon lost to an agent that kept rewriting the test instead of fixing the bug.

Nobody posts the output that looked right, passed review, and blew up two weeks later.

Nobody posts the config sprawl, the prompt tweaks, the token bill. Or the moment you realize the elaborate setup needs a maintainer.

The maintainer is you.

Failure doesn't get reshared. Neither does "it was fine, sometimes." So the feed fills up with peaks, and you end up comparing your whole week against everyone else's best ten minutes.

You lose that comparison every time. It's rigged.

Here's what nobody selling a workflow will tell you:

You can be an excellent software engineer without adopting every new technique.

You always could. The good engineers never chased every framework. They picked deliberately, adopted late, and kept what earned its place.

Nothing about that changed. A tool that saves you an hour a week is a win. A tool that costs you two hours of babysitting is a hobby.

Stop measuring against the feed. Measure against yourself.

End of each week, ask:

  • Did I ship something useful?
  • Did I understand something more deeply?
  • Did I improve my workflow?
  • Did I protect enough attention to do meaningful work?

Look at what's missing. Did I try the new thing. Did I keep up. Did I post about it.

Mostly yes? You're fine. Whatever tools got you there.

Mostly no? Another agent framework won't save you.

The last question is the one that matters.

Attention is the scarcest thing you have, and the discourse is built to eat it. Every week brings a new technique you're supposedly behind on. Keeping up is a full-time job that ships nothing.

You're not behind. You're distracted.

Close the tab. Build something.
